Just another day for TV’s Blair Peyton…
“Tuned Out” is approaching its 5th airing on WSLS and (knock on wood) I’ve been getting positive feedback despite airing at 12:30 on a Sunday (Monday) night. I love our little show, but I’m more excited about the episodes beyond season 1 to air. That’s where I believe we really began to hit our stride and had some really strong episodes, especially this new season we’re currently in. Starting out as a web-series, we weren’t too heavy on censoring ourselves. I didn’t realize how “borderline” our 1st Christmas show was until I began editing it for WSLS. The term “big ol’ Jew” was endearing thrown around; the phrase from Lester “I’ve got pussy on the brain” was casually uttered (clearly referring to the cat) and so on…
Despite the positive reaction, I’m always waiting for the anvil to drop. It’s just my nature. Plus being a “PK” (preacher’s kid), you’ve always got some holier-than-thou disapproving of your (my) every action. Thank goodness my parents have never been that way, no matter what twisted/slightly off venture I’m partaking in. At the radio station I work for, we run religious programming on Sunday mornings and one of the preachers’ let me know they caught the show. I didn’t ask what they thought. That was another thing I learned, DON’T ask what they think because they will tell you.
The biggest hurdle for my first foray into network TV is… you guessed it, SALES! It is turning this usually sunny and upbeat person into a negative, bitter dummy. I had one local company tell me they had no money for advertising and I totally empathized. Then this company turns around and sponsors a “higher profile” local show. Not cool guys, not cool. And if I hear another local merchant say “support local” when they themselves don’t do it; I’m going to forcibly hurl on your “local” product. Needless to say, I’ve taken a T-O from selling this week. It is taxing my nerves… I know you’re probably sick of hearing me bitch about this, but tough. This is my blog and if you don’t like it, then go buy a domain! See!!! I’ve changed! I’m so hard now.
Blair
Hang in there Blair, I know the feeling of local sales completely sucking and I in turn do not spend money with companies that preach “support local,” while sipping lattes from chain establishments and refusing to answer calls from local companies looking partner with them.
